Helping you start or renew your prayer life.

prayer course

Prayer helps us enjoy our relationship with God, grows our own spiritual self-awareness, and is a channel to love others more. This resource is to help start or renew your prayer life.

How this works: The sermon series gets into the content of prayer, what kind of things we can be mindful of as we pray. The practical prayer course gets to the doing of prayer in the context of a community. Learning about prayer without actually doing it is not ideal! The two are meant to be connected together. There is also a list of resources that we highly recommend.

If you have any questions on any of this, or if you would like to learn more about a church that wants to grow in prayer, you can contact Greg.

Practical Prayer Course

This is a group course designed for our missional communities, if you’d like to learn more about these groups, contact us.

Session One: Posture & Planning

Prayer helps us enjoy our relationship with God, grows our own spiritual self-awareness, and is a channel to love others more. This resource is to help start or renew your prayer life.

Session Two: What To Pray For

We should ask God for things, but our prayer lives should include more than just asking. We will learn how to treat God as a Person and prayer as a conversation.

Session Three: listening to God

How can we rightly incorporate listening into our prayer lives? There are some mistakes to avoid as we develop spiritual ears.

Session Four: What about distractions?

Everyone's prayer life has to deal with distractions. What are ways around this reality? And what could it mean to include distractions in our prayers?

Resources mentioned: PrayerMate, Pray as you go, Lectio 365.

Session Five: tools for prayer

Some tips on how to make prayer a priority. If you don't have some kind of system or tool for prayer, it will be more difficult. Prayer is difficult enough as it is! The goal here will be to make prayer as easy and simple as possible.

Resources mentioned: Paul Miller’s Prayer Cards (you can easily create these yourself), Scriptures for prayer, PrayerMate, Pray as you go, Lectio 365, 3/3 Prayer Card (on this page).

Session Six: Pray until you pray

This title is taken from a Puritan phrase that D.A. Carson brings up on his book on prayer, Praying with Paul. How can we be persistent in prayer, but not consumeristic? And how can we avoid prayer becoming an empty religious exercise?

3/3 Prayer Card

The 3/3 Prayer Card is designed to make it easier to pray more often. There are three groups in three categories: people who don’t know Jesus yet, people who do, and the larger view of our church, city, and world.

The goal is to get you to pray for at least one group of three once a day.
